Course Description

This masterclass offers an interdisciplinary approach to the practice of photography as performance. Working with street and fine art photography approaches and aesthetics, we will probe the relationship between subject and object, public and private, body and space.

Through research and creative practice, we will explore the conceptual and practical interplay between the body, space, buildings and the materiality of the city. We will learn classic ephemeral techniques from performance art and create incidental scenes which explore our identities in relation to the place and its social dynamics in public space. Participants will use photography not only as a tool to document, but also as a performative work in itself. This approach sits at the crossroads of photography practice, urban studies, the anthropology of space and performance theory of embodiment.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes

By the end of the masterclass, participants will have an understanding of contemporary photographic practice on art and architecture, a conceptual approach to the representation of space and its social values, and how to construct visual narratives within the context of public urban space and architecture. They will have learned techniques of professional architectural photography by using digital cameras. They will be able to enact within the urban arena or a public building a personal, intellectual or emotional response to the space. Each participant will produce a portfolio of work and will be encouraged to develop a clear research and conceptual definition of their practical subject of study as it unfolds. They will use their creativity as a tool to build social skills and relations, increasing their awareness of how artistic approaches to photography and social values are intertwined.
